Font ❤️ Friday and Other Designery Things #30

Hi Reader,

Thanks for Subscribing ♥

Hello Friends, and welcome if you’re new here.

The world feels a little weird to some people right now. From politics to uncertainty with work - it's a lot to deal with. So I hope this newsletter in this small corner of the world gives you a little joy or inspiration for the next few minutes.

Speaking of work, a biz pal recently said to me she likes me sharing my content. I said I’ve held back a lot because sometimes it feels like showing off. She immediately gave me a talking to (in a nice way) and said keep sharing your wins big or small.

So my top tip - if you are in full time employment or a small business keep telling people about who you are and what you do. I did and pinned it to my Instagram profile.

My font of the month is my own brand font! About time, hey? It’s what I have across my website and I’m now integrating it into my socials thanks to Adobe Express. I used to have all my templates in Canva (don’t judge). My brand font is:

Orpheus Pro has the business edge but I also love its elegance. Plus Squarespace (where I host mine and clients’ websites) had it as one of their fonts too! Win win!... more wins!

They say: “it is rooted in two late 1920s designs by Walter Tiemann, who had an impressive talent for combining classic Roman proportions and Art Deco sensibilities. It has become a standard font in packaging and entertainment design.”

Well for the next few minutes I’m in the business of entertaining. So, lets crack on…

FONTS

Here are some typefaces I’ve come across this month in the I Love Typography catalogue:

Joc Display - a fun playful font based on an exhibition on children's playground design.

Louvette - I could see this used for a big poster or magazine headline for a fashion brand. What do you think?

Lubaline - they say: “Screw legibility, type should be beautiful” well we can’t argue too much with that for this typeface!

DESIGNERY THINGS

Print is not Dead! If you know me, you’ll know I love magazines. So, this edition of Designery Things is dedicated to them.

Zines Forever!

Broadly speaking, “zines” are a DIY publication produced in small numbers, often a single sheet of paper folded into itself to produce pages. I went to visit the ‘Zines Forever’ exhibition at the Wellcome Trust – it focuses on publishing for disability and justice. You get to pick them up, have a read and even lie down on a bed to be fully immersed in the zines on display. It’s on from 14 March 2025 – 14 September 2025.

Up your street

The Magazine Street conference is back on the 3rd of October. The event is brought to you by the International Magazine Centre's annual conference, celebrating the wonderful world of magazine publishing. I spoke on stage last year with Peter Huston about life in publishing - it was fab! Nikki Simpson and the team are passionate about it and put on a great day for attendees. You can get the earlybird tickets here.

Magfest

The lovely Benita and Rob from Tonic magazine are putting on the ‘Indie Magfest. This event offers a fantastic chance to showcase indie magazines to a broader audience. Come along, I’ll be repping Freelancer Magazine. Here are the deets and the flyer. Location: Gipsy Hill Brewery Taproom, Unit 5, 160 Hamilton Road, London SE27 9SF Date: 13th April, starting at 12 pm.

FREELANCING

I spoke on a panel this month and the facilitator Tamu Thomas reminded everyone in the room that we are all a business. Especially if you’re a one person band, it’s important to remember. We can call ourselves freelancers - as others often do. But we are a business offering a service. Remember that. Picture yourself as a shop front, imagine you’re walking into your premise door when you start work everyday.

Freelancer Magazine has created The Directory

This is an awesome opportunity to be where companies are searching for your services. Also if you have a website it is great for the backlinks and your SEO. Take a look and sign up to be a member of Freelancer Magazine Directory Crew. Here's how my profile looks:

Create on Creator Day

Conferences can be big, all consuming events. But with You Are The Media (YATM) Creator Day, you feel welcome and part of a family. Listen to the stories of Failed Nights on Wednesday night and then Thursday is the main event. Mark Masters welcomes everyone - honestly, he will make you feel so at home. I went last year and one of my highlights was the next day when a few of us took a dip in the sea. Not just refreshing for the body but the mind too! I went home buzzing with ideas and new friends made. This year there will be a live recording of one of my fave podcasts ‘indie business club’ and also co-working with the Being Freelance crew. Come join us.

This is no April fools.

Check out the Cheetos Other Hand Font. A campaign created because they say: 99% of people eat Cheetos with their dominant hand. Which means Cheetos lovers need to live their life by using their Other Hand. So what to do…? They created a font! Watch it here.

I prefer Wotsits myself!

Have a wonderful month ahead. Remember how awesome you are and keep sharing your wins!

FONTLOVEFRIDAY Font ❤️ Friday and Other Designery Things #29 Hi Reader, Thanks for Subscribing ♥ Welcome to the first Font Love Friday of 2025! I didn’t send one in January because last month was just a massive blur. I launched my podcast Creatives Like Us and hosted an event with the same name, for creatives of colour. Which was brilliant. But I also had to do jury service. Which was not so brilliant. Then with catching up with all my work I had no capacity to write this newsletter. I love...
