Font ❤️ Friday and Other Designery Things #31

Hi Reader,

Thanks for Subscribing ♥

Hello Friends, and welcome if you’re new here.

When you’re running your own business, sometimes things slip.

I let my newsletter Font Love Friday and Other Designery Things Newsletter slip into May... I didn’t send an April edition. Regular subscribers know it's normally out on the last Friday of the month... So to make up for it, here is a mini May edition!

This week marks the end of school life for my two teens. So many mixed emotions! Both are creating designs for their leavers shirts. My daughter says to me “Mum, do you have any fonts to design my shirt?” Errr, incoming 20 mins of me researching and chatting about what would look good for something she would forget in a year's time! But today - it’s very important.
Do you feel like that with your work? At the time you think “this is THE ONE” but when you look at it later, you think “why on earth did I choose that??” That’s why it’s important not to get too caught up with the trends, especially with fonts. Think about what will stand the test of time. Well, at least for a good few years. Want to see the font we went for?

It’s a Comic Graffiti Font. It’s not a serious one. But it’s great fun for playful projects. The creators say:Waosh combines the rebellious spirit of street art with the whimsical nature of comic fonts. This unique blend results in a font that is both edgy and playful, perfect for projects that need a touch of creative flair.”

There are hundreds of graffiti styles out there. Also do you remember the days when street art was seen as a terrible thing? Now councils commission it! Don’t be doing anything illegal, always seek permission before you create on an empty wall - oh, hello Banksy!

FONTS

History repeating

Check out Fonts In Use, an independent archive of past places you’ll find fonts. My fave is on the book: Cookin' With Queen Ida. Love the cover, the fonts Dolmon and Zierdolmen, the chopped up food, and she has an accordion! I’d love a little tune whilst cooking - no Spotify here!

DESIGNERY THINGS

Editorial Design

I had a report from Google recently saying my most looked at blog is What is Editorial Design? I’d been wondering why and I think I know. It’s this book: Editorial Design which has just been released. I’m guessing people have been googling it!

I have this on my list to get, though my birthday is next month.. ahem just saying!

FREELANCING

Last minute CPD seaside trip

CPD - Continuing Professional Development. Creator Day by You Are The Media is next week! Come along to Poole for a day of creativity, motivation and to make new friends. Can’t wait to see my biz pals speak - Mel Barfield, Steve Folland and Jess Bruno. There’s stuff going on either side of the event too, so you can make the most of being by the seaside.

I have a discount code! Use TeamAngela and you will get a discount of £40 off the ticket price here. See you at the seaside?

Hype yourself

Lucy Werner is the OG in teaching you to hype yourself with PR. This week she shared she’s lost her ENTIRE Substack she’s built over the years. It’s practically her whole business she’s built up over the past few years. Paid subscribers could go and see the archives and read up on how to hype themselves. So if you can, go give Lucy a follow and support her in rebuilding her newsletter here. She always gives good advice to freelancers and small businesses.

#FONTLOVEFRIDAY

Last month I was invited to The House of Lords! Fancy, I know. I shared the day in this LinkedIn post. This client, the Publishers Association, found me on a Google search via a blog I wrote on Report Design. Top tip - make sure you’re always marketing yourself in various places. Who knows where a client/collaborator might find you, and where you might end up as a result!

Creatives Like Us - The Event

We are back! After the success of our first event, attendees wanted another one. And so, a community has begun. Me and my event co-founders, Ayo Abbas and Vanessa Belleau are in full swing planning for Thursday 19th June 2025. You can get your tickets here.

Told you it was a mini edition of FLF! I’ll be back at the end of the month - where normal business resumes.

Have a wonderful month ahead
