Font ❤️ Friday and Other Designery Things #32

Hi Reader,

Thanks for Subscribing ♥

Phew! I’m back.

After promising I’d be regular with this monthly newsletter, I feel like I let myself down - and you! But hey, you understand that (especially as a solo business owner) life stuff happens.

What’s been happening with me? Well, I lost my beloved cat Coco. After 10 years we said our farewells and she left us. It’s so weird because I’m writing this in the garden and she would have sat next to me hoping to get a treat and then be on her way.

I love sharing happy things with you and my socials, but we all know (especially the way of the world at the moment) there are unhappy days too.

I have had happy days with my family and spent them in the sun. Oooo la la it’s been hot! Have you been trying to keep cool? I’m back at my desk with the fan on and completed a few branding projects for clients. I’d love to share one project with you and the fonts I used.

Jenny Holliday is a Career Happiness Coach. That job title itself makes me smile so much. After meetings with Jenny, I know she’s an advocate of personal growth in people and also has a passion for the outdoors. With all this in mind, I designed her branding with the fonts Moot Jungle (with decorative leaves) and paired it with Fangira typeface.

They say Fangira is a “unique ligature serif font that blends modern sophistication with timeless elegance. Designed with distinctive letter combinations and refined curves, this font is ideal for high-end branding” and The Moot Jungle is an “elegant serif font with a natural twist. Inspired by the beauty of nature, this font features a stunning swash of leaves that adds a touch of sophistication to any design.” So you actually get two fonts this month 🙂

Jenny is now taking on new clients on her website - which I also designed for her. Humbling words from Jenny about working with me… “I am super chuffed with my new site and logo - I feel like Angela has really captured who I am, and what I want people to feel when they 'meet' me on my site.”

If you have branding or a website you’d like help with, book a free call and let’s see how we can work together.

Ok that’s the plug over, here’s the good stuff I’ve collected up for you.

FONTS

TypeHeist
I’ve been moseying around the TypeHeist website and selected a couple of pages I think you’ll enjoy.

Handwritten font pairings
The peeps over at TypeHeist very kindly produced a 52-page guide on how to pair handwritten fonts. It’s full of tips and tricks of ways to use them. I know sometimes I get stuck and a little inspo can help. Have a look here and get yours.

Wanted - a happy home
While delving into handwritten fonts I saw a typeface called Sad Poem. All together now, “aww!” You know me, I’m normally here for the happy stuff. But this typeface Sad Poem got me… so adopt it and give it a happy home please!

DESIGNERY THINGS

Beautiful art prints on the internet you can buy right now
There’s been a lot of summer birthdays in my world and buying from an independent can make a big difference to their business. Here are some creators I love.

Over on Instagram, check out these artists and their love for colour - Sandra Palmer (The Brummy Artist) and artist Aurélia Durand.

Vic Lee is another artist that I love. I have one of his posters.

Amy Nolan is the resident artist for Freelancer Magazine. Check out her downloadable doodles and postcards and prints you can buy in her Kofi shop.

Ok, I bought a few for myself - after all, it was my birthday in June!

FREELANCING

Keeping it small but mighty
I’ve recently been using Small Business Britain. They have lots of programmes to help you with your business. Yes, including you dear freelancer. You are still running a business, it’s just solo! I recently completed the Small & Mighty Enterprise Programme and the closing event was an invitation to the House of Lords! Blimey, again! I’ve been there twice in two months (remember that blog on report design I wrote that got me there the first time round?)

I’ve signed up to their Green Growth Programme, a free 6-week CPD-certified course run in partnership with BT starting in September. We’re all aware of environmental issues, but I’d like to learn more about how I can make a difference in my business.
Small Business Britain have recently published the Willow Review on Small and Medium-sized Enterprises about sustainability. You can download it here.

A little housekeeping news from me.

Season One of my podcast Creatives Like Us is coming to a close in a few weeks. I already have plans for Season Two, which I’ll share more about in the next FLF.

The event I’ve created with Ayo and Vanessa “Creatives Like Us” is back in October. We’ve been busy planning to make it another success after the last June event and you can get organised and buy your tickets here.

Thank goodness, it’s Friday. What are you up to this weekend? I’m sorting and decluttering again and hopefully putting up some art that’s been in poster tubes for ages - well, that is the plan!

Have a wonderful month ahead.

FONTLOVEFRIDAY Font ❤️ Friday and Other Designery Things #33 Hi Reader, Thanks for Subscribing ♥ Yesterday, I spoke at the Designer Boss Summit. How honoured was I?! So many awesome design peeps there including Chris Do. My talk was about getting clients’ eyes on your business. The theme of the summit was Design & Dollars rodeo! I found a cowboy hat from my kids’ old fancy dress drawer and wore it. I must admit I got hot and took it off! One of my tips to get more eyes on your business was...

Hey Reader Happy Monday! Do you use a vision board? I do and while some things on mine have come true, it’s always taken effort and action to make them happen. This year, my board included becoming an Adobe Express Ambassador and speaking at a design summit. Adobe said no (booo), but I am speaking at a summit (yay!). It’s a reminder that we’ve got to keep trying. So, when I say “this is my first rodeo,” it’s with the Designer Boss Summit! My talk will be on “5 Ways to Get More Client Eyes on...
