Font ❤️ Friday and Other Designery Things #33

Hi Reader,

Thanks for Subscribing ♥

Yesterday, I spoke at the Designer Boss Summit. How honoured was I?! So many awesome design peeps there including Chris Do. My talk was about getting clients’ eyes on your business.

The theme of the summit was Design & Dollars rodeo! I found a cowboy hat from my kids’ old fancy dress drawer and wore it. I must admit I got hot and took it off!

One of my tips to get more eyes on your business was creating your own newsletter. If you’re new here, this is my monthly email on Fonts, designery things and freelance life.

I highlight a font of the month, sometimes based around a theme. This month, I’m going to pick a slab serif. That’s the kind of font I think about when I think of rodeos, cowboys and westerns.
A slab serif has thick blocks at the end for serifs and they often look heavy. There are many slab serif typefaces including Rockell, Courier and many more. I have picked the slab serif “SLAG” (yes - people check cultural appropriation and local meanings when it comes to naming stuff!)

Slag comprises of 5 styles. On the basis of the primary linear Black style, other variations have been designed, including inner line styles.

I have to say I love the branding around the Design & Dollars Rodeo. Not a slab serif in sight!

There’s still time to sign up to watch all the replays here, they are live until Sunday. Unless you get the Boss Bundle* and they are yours forever.

Onto more good stuff…

FONTS

Back to basics
The newly published book Back to Fonts is out now. It takes you back to the beginning and teaches the history of how some classic typefaces came about. It comes with a warning: Warning: this book may cause you to rethink your default typeface settings.

DESIGNERY THINGS

Blogs are not dead
The Design Your Way blog is brilliant and has so many nuggets of useful information and tools that can help your daily designs.

Got to be in it to win it
The Communication Arts Typography Competition is open to all. They say it celebrates the best use of typography as the primary visual element in design and advertising, plus new typeface designs, calligraphy and hand lettering. Go for it! Enter and see more info here.

FREELANCING

Another point on my talk was about networking - check out what’s in your area. If you’re London based, The St Bride Foundation is a good place for events to learn and meet other design types. Join Kelli Anderson to celebrate the publication of her pop-up book Alphabet in Motion. Hear the talk and mingle after. If you don’t get to make this one, sign up to their mailing list for further updates. They also have online options, so you won’t miss out.

A little more news from me. I released my final episode of this season of my podcast Creatives Like Us this week. It was a round up of the last 16 episodes and I’d like to say a big thank you if you’ve ever listened, shared or left comments. I truly appreciate it.

Creatives Like Us the event is back on Thursday 16th October and the early bird ticket price ends on the 1st September. You can buy (or share with someone who you might like to come) here.

If you’ve spotted any new fonts, designery things or any freelancing tips out in the wild, let me know and I will try to feature it in the next edition. I reply to everyone who emails me... So don’t be shy - hit reply!

Have a great month ahead,

Ange 🌈

Hey Reader Happy Monday! Do you use a vision board? I do and while some things on mine have come true, it’s always taken effort and action to make them happen. This year, my board included becoming an Adobe Express Ambassador and speaking at a design summit. Adobe said no (booo), but I am speaking at a summit (yay!). It’s a reminder that we’ve got to keep trying. So, when I say “this is my first rodeo,” it’s with the Designer Boss Summit! My talk will be on “5 Ways to Get More Client Eyes on...

FONTLOVEFRIDAY Font ❤️ Friday and Other Designery Things #32 Hi Reader, Thanks for Subscribing ♥ Phew! I’m back. After promising I’d be regular with this monthly newsletter, I feel like I let myself down - and you! But hey, you understand that (especially as a solo business owner) life stuff happens. What’s been happening with me? Well, I lost my beloved cat Coco. After 10 years we said our farewells and she left us. It’s so weird because I’m writing this in the garden and she would have sat...
