Font ❤️ Friday and Other Designery Things #35

Hi Reader,

Thanks for Subscribing ♥

Happy Friday! Welcome to my monthly newsletter on fonts, designery things and biz tips to help your day-to-day work life.

“Blank page, blank page…!”

Where do you start when it's time to tell people about you and what you do? Top tip: don't start with a blank page when you're creating content!

I gather ideas for this newsletter throughout the month. A note on my phone here, a Google doc there. You could do the same. Maybe set up a Trello board or send yourself voice notes to capture your thoughts as they come?

And remember, content isn't just social media posts. It can be a newsletter, an email to clients announcing availability, or sharing that podcast you guested on. You're already creating, you just need to capture it. And then put it out there!

One typeface in my collection of Google doc ideas is my font of the month:

I’m working on a new client project and podcast cover art. I came across this typeface - Experimo by the R9 Type+Design foundry and designer, Tana Kosiyabong. It's very funky and reminds me of contemporary Japanese lettering - it really stands out. It’s fun and includes lots of glyphs, emojis and different weights. Check out the full set here.

FONTS

What I’m reading:

Issue 10 of Type One magazine. Lush printed pages of type goodness. This issue explores type’s place in the design industry culture today.

DESIGNERY THINGS

What I’m listening to:

The font one: The Type Convo Podcast - Season 2 episode 2 (oh hello, it's me!) The current state of Design in 2025 - part 2 hosted by Alen Kapetanovic

The design one: Creative Boom hosted by Katie Cowan Episode 171 with Haraldur Thorleifsson on Building with Kindness

The biz one: Small Business Casual by Emily Aborn Episode Damned if you do, Damned if you don’t.

FREELANCING/BIZ TIPS

Your work life on an A4 page (or two… maximum!)

I’ve just got back from giving Curriculum Vitae/Resume advice at a graduate careers fair at the university – Central St Martins. Whether you’re an experienced pro or just starting out, think about having your CV on file. Just in case you’re asked for it. Also, with the rise of AI and the scanners that read CVs - don't use columns because the readers read it line by line. Also remove your photo - AI bias is real! Seen the Netflix documentary, Coded Bias?

Branding that means business

I recently wrapped up a website project with Pauline Smith from The Comms Smith, a corporate communications specialist. With years of experience under her belt, Pauline needed a site that truly reflects her expertise. I also polished up her branding. Check out the before and after transformation I created in Squarespace. A professional photoshoot and fresh brand identity now captures who Pauline is, including subtle nods to her love of music. The result? A polished, professional online presence that's ready to impress the corporate world. If you're ready for a new site or brand refresh, book a call and let's get you client-ready.

Get in touch here and join my waitlist. I'm now taking bookings from January 2026 onwards. As you are a special FLF subscriber, I’ll keep them at this year's pricing if you book me in before the end of December 2025.

Thanks to all of you who checked to see if I had won at The Black Podcast Awards. It wasn't a win but I am extremely grateful to have been nominated for Best Arts and Best International Podcast for 'Creatives Like Us'. It's a BIG WIN to even have been recognised for it.

That's all for this month! I hope you found something useful, whether it's a new typeface to play with, a podcast to queue up or just a reminder to keep capturing those ideas before they disappear.

Remember, your best work doesn't have to start with a blank page. It starts with all those little notes and creative gems you've been collecting. Record things along the way and it’ll save you a lot of stress. And we all want more calm in our lives.

Have a spooktacular 🎃 rest of your Friday and a creative month ahead.

FONTLOVEFRIDAY Font ❤️ Friday and Other Designery Things #33 Hi Reader, Thanks for Subscribing ♥ Yesterday, I spoke at the Designer Boss Summit. How honoured was I?! So many awesome design peeps there including Chris Do. My talk was about getting clients’ eyes on your business. The theme of the summit was Design & Dollars rodeo! I found a cowboy hat from my kids’ old fancy dress drawer and wore it. I must admit I got hot and took it off! One of my tips to get more eyes on your business was...

Hey Reader Happy Monday! Do you use a vision board? I do and while some things on mine have come true, it’s always taken effort and action to make them happen. This year, my board included becoming an Adobe Express Ambassador and speaking at a design summit. Adobe said no (booo), but I am speaking at a summit (yay!). It’s a reminder that we’ve got to keep trying. So, when I say “this is my first rodeo,” it’s with the Designer Boss Summit! My talk will be on “5 Ways to Get More Client Eyes on...
