Font ❤️ Friday and Other Designery Things #38

FONTLOVEFRIDAY

Hi Reader,

Thanks for Subscribing ♥

Happy Friday! Welcome to my monthly newsletter on fonts, designery things and biz tips to help your day-to-day work life.

Right. It's the last Friday of February. How has the shortest month somehow felt the longest?! I’m not going to ask how your new year goals are going... Instead, I'll just say: we're still here, we're still making things and that counts for a lot.

If you’ve given up cheese for Lent, look away now…

This month’s font is by a friend of Font Love Friday – type designer Jamie Clarke.

Jamie created the bespoke font for the iconic British animated duo Wallace & Gromit for Aardman Studios. And we know who’s famously, obsessively devoted to cheese in the show!

The font is called Buttered Crumpet and it oozes warmth with hand-crafted serifs shaped like little loaves of bread. Cosy British perfection.

It's a bespoke commission so you can't buy it. But the case study is a lovely read here and it fits along nicely alongside the Designery Things section below, where the Aardman story continues...

FONTS

Television Sans by Sami Mularczyk
A free variable geometric sans-serif inspired by newsprint ads from the 1980s. Friendly, a little retro and already very usable even though it's still a work in progress. More here.

DESIGNERY THINGS

More Aardman
Yes! Wallace & Gromit and Shaun the Sheep are celebrating their 50th anniversary by touring the UK with a live orchestra. Joyful. I love this article by Creative Boom, especially because every conversation at the moment seems to be about AI. The article makes the point every creative needs to hear right now - those thumbprints you can see in the plasticine aren't a flaw, they are the product. The human hand is the whole point. In a world full of instantly generated content, that's your competitive advantage. Good read.

Dialed
The colour game that’s a little addictive. They show you five colours. You recreate them from memory - I didn't do too badly!

It’s free and you can challenge a designer friend to see how they do.

Thanks Dave Smyth for sharing it in your newsletter and Molly for telling me about Dave!

FREELANCING/BIZ TIPS

I'm presenting at the Freelancer Magazine Masterclass!
Next week, I'm presenting at the Freelancer Magazine Masterclass LIVE. It’s a two-day virtual event on 4th & 5th March full of practical, peer-led workshops for freelancers.

My session is Creating a memorable freelance brand across all platforms – showing up consistently everywhere without losing your personality in the process.

I’m looking forward to it as I’ll get to work on my business as I learn from the other hosts.

Plus, it also feels a bit special because I’m the creative lead at Freelancer Magazine. Full circle moment!

Come along and say hi, I'd love to see you there! Tickets are here*

Creatives Like Us
A new episode of my podcast Creatives Like Us - is out now. A solo episode with me on Brand consistency across your business. It ties in with my workshop above so have a listen here.

#FONTLOVEFRIDAY

This week I was invited to The RSA, the Royal Society of Arts in London to celebrate the launch of a report I'd designed for a client. We’ve worked together for a few years. We met on LinkedIn and have only had emails and Zoom calls, so it was great to meet her in real life. As I was leaving, I remembered that I used to design the RSA member magazine many years ago. There I was, back at the RSA, celebrating work I'm proud of with a client who found me online and trusted me with something important to her. Another full circle moment! So remember, you never know who’s watching you on Linkedin. Keep posting and keep working on building your brand so people remember you. And when they need someone who does what you do, hopefully your name will be at the top of their list.

If you made it this far - thanks for reading and have a good one!
