Font ❤️ Friday and Other Designery Things #40

FONTLOVEFRIDAY

Hi Reader,

Are you in the full throes of the World Cup? Or you might be glancing from the sidelines keeping an eye on it. Are you like me? I love looking at the designs of the kits and the footwear. A lot of pink boots out there on the field. Did you know that FIFA had the typeface created especially for the 2026 World Cup? But what’s caught my eye are the graphics from the BBC. They’ve used a typeface with a gothic feel – Blackrock. So the font of the month is:

Inspired by blackletter typefaces. What are they I hear you ask…? Blackletter typefaces are also known as Gothic or Old English typefaces. A family of fonts that are inspired by the dark, calligraphic letters of the Middle Ages. Blackrock is designed by Jeff Schreiber and the BBC added splashes of neon to give the graphics a fun, dynamic feel. You can try it for yourself for free here.

Now time for...

DESIGNERY THINGS

I was sad to hear of the passing of David Hockney this month. The tributes came in from across the globe. Creative Boom gathered a collection of illustrated portraits – artists from around the world sharing how they saw and interpreted him. A beautiful way to celebrate his legacy. I love Nia Gould's take on it. She switched it up to cats!

FREELANCING/BIZ TIPS

I'm always an advocate of networking and getting out to meet new people, whether online or in person. I co-host a one-day monthly meet-up called Cowork Crew in London. Our next one is on 10th July and we have a lunchtime speaker (well, doodler), Amy Nolan. Cowork Crew is UK-based (at the moment) and you can find one near you here.

And if you can't make Cowork Crew, take a look at what's on in your area for business owners to meet. Libraries, the Chamber of Commerce and Eventbrite are great places to start. Think about the rooms you want to be in to gain new contacts – networking can be in different shapes:

Whether you're watching every match or just catching the highlights, the World Cup is a reminder that design is everywhere. On the pitch, on the screen and in the stands. Next time you're watching, take a moment to look at the lettering, the designs and those colours. Until next time, keep spotting the good stuff.

Have a bright weekend and stay cool!
